Which one is best for your stainless steel pool?

Stainless steel is a metal alloy composed mainly of iron, chromium and other elements such as nickel and molybdenum. Two of the most common types of stainless steel are AISI 304 and AISI 316L, which differ mainly in their chemical composition and performance.

AISI 304 is an austenitic alloy containing about 18 percent chromium and about 8 percent nickel, along with small amounts of carbon and other elements. It is widely used for its good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance in non-aggressive environments.

AISI 316L is a variant of AISI 316, which adds a reduced carbon content (indicated by the “L” for “low carbon”) to improve weldability. This alloy contains about 16-18% chromium, 10-14% nickel, and about 2-3% molybdenum. The presence of molybdenum gives AISI 316L greater corrosion resistance in chloride-containing environments, such as salt water and chlorine-treated swimming pools.

When it comes to building a luxury swimming pool or mini-pool, AISI 316L stainless steel is often preferred for several reasons. Its improved resistance to corrosion in aggressive environments, together with its improved resistance to corrosion under tension, ensures greater durability and structural stability over time. This is especially important considering the constant exposure to chlorinated water in swimming pools, which can cause corrosion and deterioration over time.

Although AISI 316L may cost slightly more than AISI 304, higher initial investments are often justified by the greater durability and reliability offered by AISI 316L.
